The concept of this video came to us literally in the night. My wife had a dream about a dancer who jumped off from a height and landed on a stage – with overcoming obstacles and fears as a core theme. However, pulling something off visually based on a dream is quite a challenge!
With limited time to our disposal, we chose a venue here in our hometown that was once used as a milling and flour factory. It has a rustic look, with big windows and some big spaces, and we thought it would give an interesting feel to the story.
Finding appropriate music is always a challenge. During the shoot, we wanted to play a song for the dancer to dance to, and one of our team members who is an incredible musician and song writer had one of the tracks that he recently recorded ready. After a few practice rounds of the dancer dancing to his song, all of us were sold on using this original song as the track to the edit.
We shot the video in the middle of a hard lockdown in South Africa, so crowds of people were quite difficult to come by. With a clever knit-one-slip-one approach and some lighting tricks, we made 30 people look like a crowd for our final scene where the dancer performed in front of a crowd.
What stood out for me with this camera was the fact that Sony managed to take a compact and lightweight body, pair it with a full frame sensor and throw in extended battery life. It compares to the A7M3, but I think with its affordable price-tag it is going to make this camera really popular, especially in the wedding and events industry as a B-cam.
